One Voice, One March, One Lupang Hinirang

(Isang Boses, Isang Martsa, Isang Lupang Hinirang)
 “Kay ganda ng ating musika.”
How lovely our music is, says one OPM song of Hadji Alejandro. And one evident thing to prove it is the adept musicians produced, catering the local and international music industries. Of course, if there were no beautiful songs written, how could they be such so famous like that. If a lovely creature takes it to possess a distinct, unique feature of it that one would surely love – attractive characteristics in general. For example, a man could be attracted to a woman because of her rosy cheeks, long silky hair, or protruding lips. Counterpart of it in music is the power of emotion and rendition that makes the music alive and really much appeal to the listeners – a sure hitsong from a hitmaker is in the spotlight.
Patriotism and nationalism unites Filipinos as one, amidst the diverse values and standards, divided by dialects and culture, still undisputedly unity of the Filipino people reigns. But how about wonderin’ what urges Filipinos most at times they fight for a certain agenda, their passion for music, their flair for sounds, their craving for a national message that would envisage and cumulate the totality of various viewpoints and ideals. In music, it takes a sense of pride and nationalism. You may be wonderin’ why because you first love your land before all other places influence you. You have chosen your own culture, your own history, in short your first love, your first music.

Lupa ng araw ng luwalhati't pagsinta
Buhay ay langit sa piling mo
Aming ligaya nang pag
May mang-aapi
Ang mamatay ng dahil sayo

Tune of the Land

Music gives life to our concealed emotions in some ways. There are thousands of songs about nationalism, every single one shows love of the country and fellow men. Bayan Ko is one of hundreds of Filipino songs that shows great love of Philippines.

Originally written in Spanish by Filipino General José Alejandrino, this kundiman is often considered the unofficial second national anthem, and sometimes by Overseas Filipino groups after the Lupang Hinirang or by itself. It sometimes assumed to be a folk song because of its popularity, and has been frequently adopted by various political groups as a protest song at demonstrations due to the nature of the lyrics.

Ang bayan kong Pilipinas,
Lupain ng ginto't bulaklák.
Pag-ibig ang sa kaniyang palad
Nag-alay ng ganda't dilág.
At sa kaniyang yumi at ganda,
Dayuhan ay nahalina.
Bayan ko, binihag ka,
Nasadlak sa dusa.

Ibon mang may layang lumipad,
Kulungin mo at umiiyak!
Bayan pa kayáng sakdál dilág,
Ang 'dì magnasang makaalpás?
Pilipinas kong minumutya
Pugad ng luhà ko't dalita
Aking adhika
Makita kang sakdál laya!

First Choice, First Love, Choose Philippines!

Philippines have a lot of things to be proud of. Wherever you go, whatever you do, there’s always an exciting place to go. Tourist spots, local products, delicacies, Filipino artists and Filipino traits are only few of the important aspects of our lives to be proud of.

Accordingly, "Piliin Mo Ang Pilipinas" performed by Pilipinas Got Talent Finalist El Gamma Penumbra reflects the nationalism of Filipinos wherein the message is to show what we already have here in the Philippines. The lyrics of the song were written by Robert Labayen and the music was composed by Allan Dannug. This song was sung by Angeline Quinto and Vincent Bueno.

Flash floods due to Habagat and Maring

Filipino residents wade on floodwaters in Las Pinas City, south of Manila, Philippines, 19 August 2013.
http://ph.news.yahoo.com/

The song "Flood” written and performed by Jars of Clay suitable to the situation of the Philippines wherein many cities and provinces experienced flash floods from heavy rains due to a southwest monsoon being enhanced by tropical storm Maring (international name: Trami)

Historically, the song “Flood” is considered to be the breakthrough song of Jars of Clay due to airplay on contemporary Christian music and alternative rock radio stations, two radio formats which rarely interact with one another. It was released in 1995 on their self-titled debut album.

Pintados Festival

Pintados Festival, also known as Pintados Kasadyaan Festival, is a cultural/religous celebration held in Tacloban City, in honor of their traditional  "pintados" warrior. In 1986, the Pintados Foundation, Inc. was formed by the people of Tacloban to organize the said festival in honor of Sr. Santo Niño. Years later, it was merged with the Kasadyaan Festival which is normally held on the 30th of June.

Based from my observation, the main 'stars' of the event are the festive dancers, which are painted with amazing, bold and colorful designs to resemble their "pintados" warriors. They make the city livelier and more festive, which attracts a lot of tourists. At first, I personally thought it was hideous, since the colors were very bold and striking. But, when I was watching them, I've began to appreciate and understand their culture.

The music was literally festive, creating sounds that produce rhythm for the dancers. As I can recall, it was produced through different set of percussion instruments, and instruments made from 'kawayan' or bamboo. The music was so zesty and vibrate that it made me wanna dance a bit, of course it matched the dancers and give that festive and fun vibe.

MUSIC OF THE EAST: Bicolandia

Magayon Festival is an annual festival in May that relives the legend of Mayon Volcano. The festival derived its name from magayon, from a Bicolano term which means “beautiful.” This celebration is held in honor of Nuestra Señora de la Porteria, Daraga's patron saint. This legendary, historical and religious celebration aims to showcase the cultural life of the people of Daraga, Albay.

This festival is one of the highlights of the Bicol region that makes it wonderful. Aside from this, Bicol is known for its rich culture, from food, to its people, tradition, music and a whole lot more. They are fond of love songs or what the people call ‘Kundiman’. Bicolano art is shown in their love songs such as Sarong Bangui, Burac na Magayon and others. Among the young songs about nature are popular.

The most popular would be the Sarung Bangui; it is Bicol’s signature love ballad, and arguably one of the country’s most popular and well-loved folk songs. Composed by Potenciano Gregorio of Libog town (now Sto. Domingo) in Albay, the song which literally means “one night” tells about an enchanted evening encounter between a love-struck man and a lovely rural lass. Composed on May 10, 1910, the song was arranged for band by Gregorio in 1918 and performed by Banda de Libog, the municipal brass band. Because of its growing popularity, the composer arranged it for symphony orchestra in 1930.

You won’t have to go to Bacolod to try a Maskarra festival experience. It’s just within your reach, within the bounds of your stingy personality, within the corners of your up-to-date resources. Have you gone to PUP last August 7, 2013? Well, that’s a missed one if you haven’t. I just wanna share a Masskara festival experience in PUP. Lemme.
It is the 12th Foundation Anniversary of the Polytechnic University of the Philippines – College of Communication that made me brought myself in there and joined the gaiety. And as part of their annual celebration, there was a streetdance organized. Arrayed in bright colors, participants dance to their graces with the festivals they are representing of. Caught my ear was the musical score of the Masskara Festival group from BABRC I-1N. Energy. Liveliness. That suggests the festival of Masskara. (Because, indeed, there is no such festival that hasn’t merrymaking or dull-spirited festivity.)And the lovely smiles that would attract and make you show yours too, it’s such an experience worth watching. It does not only highlight the beauty of our land but touches our socio-cultural values.

Classical Music in Davao City

Classical Music in Davao City
The College of Communication in Polytechnic University of the Philippines celebrated its 12th Founding Anniversary on the 2nd week of August. The theme of the said event was DOSENA: Labindalawang Taon ng Pagkakisa, Karunungan at Tagumpay.
The freshmen students of the said college are required to present a street dance representing different regions in the Philippines. Various sections from various departments showcase their talents in dancing accompanying the festival they presented.
Kadayawan was one of the selected Festivals in the event.  Historically, according to http://www.kadayawan.com, the term "Kadayawan" is derived from the Mandaya word “madayaw”, a warm and friendly greeting used to explain a thing that is valuable, superior, beautiful, good, or profitable.
This festival was originated in Davao. When I explore the World Wide Web, I found out that there is a blog entitled Davao Music Nation. This DMN was created to be a medium for the different bands, artists, and music venues in the city to spread their music and gain recognition. Designed as an online magazine, it features artists monthly, introducing their story, photos, videos and of course, their music.
In the belief that music goes beyond age and genre, the featured artists range from up and coming bands from our local colleges, to established and awarded artists who have made their mark in the world with their music. It also aims to solidify these different artists, and create a solid community that works to help each other, and thus, help Davao music get heard. (http://www.davaomusicnation.com)
In this website, there are different posts showing various topics that are related to music. Here it follows: Kadayawan World Vibe, Davao Artists (Chua– Artist of the Month for August), Davao Bars (From Diner to Restobar, Sales Tekanplor), Davao Bands (6 Things You Didn’t Know About Kamaggong), and a lot more of Davao events.
By, this, I can say that Davao is truly an amazing place with talented people and great opportunities. Davao is really a great place to tour. Madayaw Dabaw!
